I GOT A JOB OFFER!!

It's for a library associate position at a branch library in the city, working primarily with children and teens, but at a branch you do a little bit of everything.

I start two weeks from Monday.

OMG so excited!

Congratulations!

Send me an email about it if you want to share more details.

So awesome. I was just thinking about you today, and hoping your job search was going well, so there must have been a vibe in the air.

Thanks! Maybe we can meet up in DC sometime--I am eventually going to have money to go to restaurants again, and I would love to have someone to go with. :)

For sure! Whenever you want to start looking at dates, let me know.... sadly I have to warn you that I usually book my social life about a month in advance. Even though I'm not a social butterfly, you sure wouldn't know from my planner! But I'm always up for going out, especially with someone that I seem to get along with quite well from our LJ exchanges over the years!

Let's not do inauguration week or weekend... I'm going to be avoiding our fine city like the plague! Have you heard the latest figures? It's going to be like 8x the crowd of 4h of July. I can't even fathom that.

I had heard that it was going to big but I guess I hadn't realized how big--I'm actually tempted to go just to say I was there.

I am kind of a massive failboat about planning way in advance--but I'll try! Let me get back to you in a couple of weeks when my schedule/hours/etc are more settled. I'm sure I'll know more once I get my offer letter in the mail and go in for orientation, but for now, all is a vast unknown.

Yay!!!
It seems kids/teens is a good place to break in.

I have a page full of manga recs and info if you need it, haha.

Ooh, thanks! I read a lot of graphic novels but I haven't really gotten into manga yet, because I've had a hard time getting used to the formatting. But I am trying--I just got volume one of Emma from the library.

The library system where I'm going seems to be very pro-graphic novels and manga, which is great!

From: [identity profile] wintersweet.livejournal.com
Yes, I love Emma (even if it's not related to Austen)! I lent what I have of it to [livejournal.com profile] toratigris, whom I've been recruiting to the manga cause lately ... Can you believe its target audience is young men? Sure, it's got some cheesecake, but that would never have been written for a male demographic in the US.

The page is here: http://www.sharedwing.net/tesol/manga/
I need to update it...

Anyway, squee!!!

Thanks, I'll definitely check out the page. The only other manga I've really read (which I liked) was Bizenghast but that's an English-language original. I think I might be bouncing off some other cultural conventions, related to plot, etc. as well.

I've also noticed a number of prose fantasy novels by Japanese writers being translated in English. Have you read the Guin Saga or Moribito, Guardian of the Spirit?

Date: 2008-12-06 05:11 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] wintersweet.livejournal.com
No, but I have Moribito on my wish list from having spotted it on a bookshelf in the local Japanese bookstore. Haven't gotten my hands on it yet, though! It's about time more fiction from other languages started to be translated into English.

If you want specific recommendations for manga that I think you might like, I could try to come up with some stuff if you tell me more about what graphic novels or fiction you like (beyond de Lint, haha). It does take some getting used to the cultural differences and the storytelling format, though, and the wildly different genres, unexpected demographic + content combinations, etc. And I've found things that I've enjoyed as manga that I'd hate in a novel format, like Paradise Kiss, which is a really stylized story about an obsessively good student who falls in with a bunch of weirdo fashion design majors. I'm sure I'd hate it if I tried reading whatever its American teen novel counterpart would be.

A friend who liked Bizenghast, which I haven't read, also liked a Korean manga (manhwa) called Tarot Cafe. But hey, maybe recommendations are pointless since soon you can just poke around your own section (if that's where they have it in your library...I hear the shelving location of manga & GNs is The Debate That Never Ends). Woohoo!

Recommendations are not pointless, they're great! That's why I'm addicted to goodreads--well, also because it's my portable brain.

Fantastic! I'm so glad that you found a job doing what you love in the city you love. Perhaps we can meet up at some point post-Christmas? Nick and I will be up in the area from the 20th to New Years-ish.

I'd love to meet up here in NoVa and it's also possible that I might be coming down to R'mond for the New Year. I've been talking about it with [livejournal.com profile] likeadeuce.

Thanks so much--I'm so excited to be back in the library world. And in a public library which will be new and different for me.

I've sometimes thought about having a job in, say, a medical library. But I love the public library so much, I don't think I'm ready to leave it. I don't know if I could like anything else as much as I like it where I am. I hope you love this! :)

Wheeeeeeeeee!!!

Excellent news, baybee. I'm so pleased for you.

We need to plan a fannish thing. Or an Inaugural thing. Whichever. I have to check whether Spouse already has any notion in that regard, but I can tell you for sure that I have no intention of going downtown. I've done July 4th, among other events, and if the crowds are anything near what's expected, well, let's just say that claustrophobes and crowds are not mixy things.

And? Wheeeeeeeeee!!!

Thanks so much! I'd love to do a fannish thing--I've been meaning to email you for ages! Job hunting made me kind of anti-social but now I am more than ready to be social.
