So, I went home to South Carolina to spend time with my family. What I ended up spending the most time with, however, was my parents' extremely comfortable futon (because the cold that I already had when I left turned into bronchitis) and the trashcan next to the futon (because I needed a place for my vast volume of tissues, and because I am, apparently, constitutionally unable to hack up nasty things with out also trigging a gag reflex that empties my entire stomach contents).
My mom was incredibly sweet and pampered me a lot, even though she hadn't been feeling so well herself, and had in fact gotten antibiotics just before she came to pick me up from the airport. She brought me toast, and orange juice, and P.G. Tips (officially the Best Tea Evar, according to me), and watched Moonlighting, which was actually supposed to be her birthday present a couple of months from now, with me at 5 a.m. on Sunday morning when I was feeling really, really terrible.
We were originally planning to go to Florida to do a big Christmas thing with my mom's side of the extended family, which we haven't done in years. All I can say is that it's a really, really good thing we didn't.
Internet time was minimal, but I did make time for a couple of long Gmail-chats with
likeadeuce once I was feeling marginally better, and I slipped over to
yuletide to leave squeeful feedback to my Santa, and to bounce a little when my recipient told me that s/he liked hir story. :)
yuletide is fabulous and crazy, and I am definitely going to do it again next year.
likeadeuce always enables me into the best stuff, like fandom itself--I'm still not sure how she does it.
I didn't make it to the Christmas Eve Service, which made me a little sad, since it is one of the things that most means "Christmas" to me. My parents didn't even have a tree--they got one, but it toppled over 3 times (3 times!) and is now sitting, unadorned, on our front porch. This has never happened before in the history of our Christmas trees--I blame the fact that our former Christmas tree supplier quit, and Mom and Dad had to go somewhere else. I did at least manage to pull myself together for a couple of hours of festivity at the annual Family Post-Christmas Eve Service Green Enchilada Supper/Drop-In, which was nice. Also, I now have a round-trip ticket to anywhere in the continental US, as a result of agreeing to be bumped from my flight out from DC. Hmm...where shall I go?
As of today, I'm back in DC, and while it was lovely to rest and be cared for by family, I kind of missed my own little apartment. But, I have to say, flying when you have bronchitis and possibly a sinus infection, sucks. Really a lot. I feel bad that my family didn't get to see more of my well, cheerful, pleasant side before I had to fly away again though.
