Wow, I'm updating again
Dec. 27th, 2004 10:09 pmWell, on Sunday after Christmas I woke up to everything iced over and Mom saying "No church today," which was a relief as I was still exhausted and did not especially want to go.
In the afternoon, I met the very nice and fun
smashsc at Adriana's, a local indie coffeehouse in Five Points (where the college students hang out and the cute shops and bars are). Walking in there felt like walking back into my college years. I even ran into someone who was a friend of a friend. in any case, I had a great time with
smashsc--score one for
karabair, because we both agree that she has a gift for bringing people together. However, (as I think she mentioned on her journal) we discovered we only really had one friend/accquaintance in common. And I learned that that friend is probably still alive because, as Smash said, "If she were dead, I'm sure I would have heard about it." She didn't know anything else about what this person was up to, but that was good to know, because she was one of the most brilliant and most self-destructive people I knew, when I knew her. She had a full scholarship, but dropped out of school after sophomore year. She's one of the ones I still think about. It was interesting to compare notes because Smash's family is very well-connected in an Old Southern Liberal kind of way--they know State Supreme Court justices and such--and has actual roots in the South, while my family is from out of state and I still sometimes feel like there are things I will never really "get." By the way, Smash, I just remembered the title of that poem cycle I was talking about, about Southern mill workers. It's called _Eureka Mill_ by Ron Rash.
Today I saw
islandisee who is going through alot of the same "finding-a-job" struggles that I am. She also needs to update her journal more often! We had a fun dinner (along with her boyfriend) and then a cathartic vent/bitch session atBen and Jerry's afterward. It was lovely seeing her again, and tonight I talked on the phone with an even older friend (going back to elementary school) who I'd lost touch with for a couple of years.
It was good to be reminded that even when we change, sometimes our friendships can evolve along with us.
